What is a school council?

The school council meets with a teacher present, to discuss how to improve our school and to help sort out any problems that might be happening to do with:

School Environment, Pupil Happiness and Well Being, Roles and Responsibilities, Healthy Eating, Safety and other ideas

Members of the school council are responsible for attending a monthly meeting, taking ideas back to class for discussion, carrying out any actions that have been agreed and looking out for new ideas or issues that need to be noted in order to help improve our school.

 What jobs are there?

Each year, every class elects two representatives to be a member of the school council. They must be sensible, responsible, kind, reliable and care about our school and the people who are in it. The council will then decide who will be the lead councillor and secretary during the year.

What makes a good school council?

A good school council is one that represents the views of all pupils and tries to make positive changes that help everyone. To try to be an effective school council we have

 ·         Regular meetings

·         A council that is not too big

·         Good communication between representatives and their class

·         A plan

Do they get anything done?

Many school councils just talk but good school councils get things done Over the last few years, school council has

·         helped to organise anti- bullying week work,

·         met with CAT safeguarding officers,

·         created and agreed lunchtime rules,

·         created and developed playground rules,

·         obtained pupils voice each term on aspects of school life including community involvement, recycling, careers and healthy schools.

·         Written to schools in Africa that are less fortunate than us.

·         Introduced and reminded teachers to check worry boxes;

·         Taken responsibility for class sports equipment buckets;

·         Talk about school council between meetings with their class;

·         Reminded teachers to ward anti-bullying ambassadors within their class and give out stickers.

·         raised awareness of issues and concerns from children in their classes.
